I made these photographs in February 2007 in the Southern States of the USA, mainly in Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida.

New Orleans. We were lucky that we could stay with Valerie and her boy-friend Ernest in the French Quarter next to Burbon Street. The whole trip we always slept in our van but it is always nice to get a shower or some warmth in a friend's house.
We came right on the weekend of Mardi Gras - the southern version of Karneval. People throw beads from floats and actually if you catch one you have to show your tits. OF COURSE I was too shy for that but Jacob caught many beads for me - generous as he is!
A lot of quarters are still totally devastated from KATRINA - and deserted. Alhough tourists and inhabitants in New Orleans try to have fun at Burbon street I felt very depressed there. Especially in the well-known 9th ward I was shocked by the devastation and especially the lonelines. We only met very few people that still live there - as you can see in the photographs. As we drove through these areas I had many doubts if this quarter will ever be a lively neighbourhood again.
